Night

Night is a first-hand recollection of the Holocaust, and dear god, is it graphic. It is a book that is created by a survivor of the Holocaust, Elie Wiesel. This book, contains imagery and knowledge that no one would want to hear, but still should. Night teaches you about so about so much more things than you could ever read from a 3 paged article about the Holocaust. It gives you an immense level of understanding that one-sentenced facts can’t give. It puts you in Elie’s shoes. It shows you, with imagery, how cruel the Holocaust period was.

I haven’t read much of the book, so I won’t really know much about the entire thing. But from what I have read so far, it’s very graphic. It’s also what you’d expect from a book about the Holocaust. This survivor’s story is very unique, it almost seems unreal.

Elie began his story with his experiences before the ghetto, and even before the decrees. I believe that he wanted us to understand the difference that the Holocaust created in their life. Now that I actually think about, it really does seem like a dream. Not even a month has past between his regular life, and being transported to a ghetto then facing the horrors of a concentration camp. That sounds absurd. One moment of your life, you’re living peacefully, next, the Hungarian Police just tell you to go outside and march for hours. That change, would be unbearable. Then, about a couple weeks after, he got transported to a Concentration Camp where he smelled fresh blood. His story… It sounds like a nightmare. If I didn’t know any better, I would really think that this story was a work of fiction, because it’s just so absurd.

Holocaust Gallery Walk

This week, we had to choose an article that is related to the Holocaust. All of the articles differentiated, from survivor experiences to newly found information. The gallery walk was a great experience. I've gained a level of understanding from today's gallery walk. All making the Holocaust even more of a sensitive topic.
The article I have chosen was about the meeting of a Survivor and his Liberator. Avital, being the survivor, and Lewis, his liberator. The article focused on both men's experiences during the Second World War. But the article revolved around the experiences of Avital. He went through so many painful situations. He was forced to watch his family die right before his eyes. He was tortured and went on to starve to near death. He didn't eat anything for 8 full days until he was liberated. All of those events led to his gratitude to Lewis. Those experiences show how thankful he is to Lewis for keeping him alive. Avital expressed that gratitude in the meeting.
One of the more interesting articles that I noticed were the articles about the Nazi Doctor, Mengele. Mengele was a man who experimented on infants. He put children through torture. Torture.
Mengele believed that he could create a dominant species. He forced twins to mate because he believed that their blood would create a perfect German. He also created a test that experimented on how long an infant can survive without food. He put a baby through torture. There have also been stories, that Mengele attached 100 eyes on a wall. He treated them as prizes. Eyes...

Memorial Blog

Hitler created laws that stripped Jews away of entertainment and even the basic needs of life. After these laws were passed, there must have been no sense of equality among the German people, more specifically, between the Jews and the rest of the Germans. The government basically banned Jews from possessing anything. Jews were banned from holding jobs that are related to the German government. Jews were even banned from attending school. Without education, they had nothing. I believe that’s what Hitler wanted, for jews to have nothing. This gives us more information on the conditions the Jews were living in. Without the basic necessities of life, without being able to do anything, we understand how badly Jews were treated.

I believe that the monument was built as a memorial so that we won’t forget what happened. If we have forgotten what the Holocaust was, what racism was, I believe that the Civil Rights Movement of America would’ve been a lot worse and a lot longer. We use the Holocaust and Hitler as a bad example of history. We need those examples so that we can make sure we don’t do them again. We need memorials so that we never forget what had happened because if we do, it will definitely happen again.

I don’t have the full amount of decrees, but I can see them get a lot harsher over the years. They began with banning them from certain jobs, but after a few years, they started creating laws that banned from moving around freely and their basic needs of life.

I believe that the laws that force Jews to show their race openly would be the most difficult. In a country that is completely racist towards Jews, it would not help to openly show that you are a Jew in public. That’s basically shoving someone into a lion’s den. You’re opening yourself to legal, ruthless abuse by citizens. I wouldn’t be able to live with hardcore abuse every day of my life.

3rd Quarter Reflections

Third Quarter Reflection

Third Quarter seems to be the time when I grew immensely. I have become more diligent and so caring about my educational life that I spend over an hour on just one assignment. I even come near to tears when I get anything lower than a B-. I wanted to have work that can’t be comparable to any of my classmates, I feel like I have achieved that. After all the effort I have put into everything that I do, I felt so satisfied in what they resulted in. I have become a candidate for Best of Berwyn, and will definitely become a finalist. As the captain of the Swim Team, I brought the relay to enter the State swim meet. I became champion in several Tennis Tournaments. I’m satisfied with all of these achievements.

Article of the Week - March 2, 2015

This week, a trivial matter seems to have taken place. There is a controversy going around on Twitter about a dress that changes color. I found that amazing! Show the picture on my right to several people around you. Some will see Blue and Black, and some will see White and Gold. That's because their eyes and your eyes perceive color a tiny bit differently, and that dress seems to be something that shows you the difference.

Twitter is blowing up about this. Some are making very humorous comments, and some are over-reacting about this topic.

"My mom just seriously asked if I was on drugs or going blind, a dress is literally tearing my family apart. #whiteandgold"
-Unknown

"From this day on, the world will be divided into two people. Blue & black, or white & gold."
-Ellen Degeneres

"I don't understand this odd dress debate and I feel like it's a trick somehow. I'm confused and scared. PS it's OBVIOUSLY BLUE AND BLACK"
-Taylor Swift

"Expect to see a spike in Google searches for 'is my husband colorblind' and 'divorce' after tonight."
-Christopher Ingraham

I don't understand why people are in such distress over a dress. When we talked about it in class, we were laughing about it. Some of us saw the dress as black and blue, while others saw the dress as white and gold. We were just very, very confused with each other. I'll admit that I first thought my friends were color blind, but I can't see how this would ruin relationships.

Another big topic of the week was about ISIS, which is not surprising. There are a number of cases about kids running away from home to join ISIS. The public doesn't have any reason as to why anybody would want to join ISIS, which is what I also believe. So this brings the entire world into a very confusing situation and makes us all want to ask, "Why?".

I have several theories to explain this. I'd like to put emphasis on "theory".

I have such a bad opinion of the new generation to think that the Run Away's saw the ISIS videos and though that they were "cool". I know that this is a very stupid theory, partially because I hope that no one is careless enough to think that way.

ISIS is forcing them to come to their side. Blackmail. But the most un-realistic part of it, is that I don't believe anyone would risk their life so that a bad picture of them isn't public.

Yeah... I can't explain any of this.

Cure for Ebola

http://www.healthmap.org/site/diseasedaily/article/did-scientists-just-discover-cure-ebola-62212

The article informs us about a group of scientists in Canada that succeeded in curing Ebola in monkeys. Ebola is one of the most deadly and little-known diseases in existence. Ebola can be transmitted from one another through bodily fluids. The symptoms of Ebola are invisible at first, but within 2 to 21 days, the symptoms will include: "Fever, headache, joint and muscle aches, sore throat, and weakness, later followed by diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain". There have been many cases of Ebola and many deaths have followed. The recent advancement is a big leap forward, but there are many steps left to come.

This could be a stop to the world-wide epidemic. That's a big deal. That's an important fact that everyone needs to know. We might no longer have to fear Ebola, we can live our lives with more peace and security. Especially the citizens that live in Africa, or areas where Ebola is very common. Their lives will change after hearing this. They'll have a chance to go outside again. They could go to school without a risk of death. They could live their daily lives without worrying about a loved one dying. That is a very important fact.
