Spoiler Summary of the First and Second Arcs

In the future, Japan has created a full immersion game device named, "NerveGear". NerveGear was the future generation of gaming where you no longer need unnecessary things such as controllers. Your sight was your characters sight, your touch was your characters touch, all of your five senses were now your character's. The first game that was published for the NerveGear was, "Sword Art Online". A MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) without the use of magic and only swords. 

But there was a problem with the game, the players were not able to log out. Soon after, they were called to the town where they learned that the "problem" was on purpose. They also found out that if you die in the game, you die in real life. Suddenly, the game became "real". The only way to get out of the game was to beat it, to defeat the last boss on the 100th floor. The game became a life and death situation.

Later, Kirito the main character was in an intense battle with a floor boss. Deciding whether or not to go in the boss room to save an entire guild. Asuna, who will later become his girlfriend then his wife, went in to save them. Kirito not wanting Asuna and the others to die went in after them. There, Kirito was forced to use his special skill, Dual Wielding, the power to hold two swords at once. After an intense fight, Kirito has soloed and defeated the floor boss. He was the first ever to defeat a floor boss by himself.

A long time after that, they come onto the 49th floor, where they are now fighting the floor boss. After that battle, they learned that the raid leader was the creator of the game and that he was the last boss. Knowing that, Kirito went and fought him. Just when Kirito was about to get struck by the last boss, Asuna shielded him and died because of that. Kirito picked up her sword then got stabbed by the last boss. Kirito went in for a kamikaze attack, stabbing the last boss and getting stabbed himself clearing the game.
