To Kill a Mockingbird - Character Relations

Character pairs:
3- Mr. Avery and Miss Maudie

Format:
a. Similarities to each other
b. Differences from each other
c. Relationship to Scout
d. Effect on Scout.

Similarities:
Mr. Avery and Miss Maudie are the exact opposite of each other. But then again, you can't be opposites of another without something to relate to. Or else you'd be saying a human and a crayon are opposites of each other. They are both in the same category of the-Old-Person-Living-Down-the-Street, but on completely different ends of the line. Other than them both being old (Seeing how they're near Atticus' age) and living in the same neighborhood, you're going to have to look really closely to find some similarities.

I also want to emphasize that they live right across from one another. Two people who are complete opposites from each other live right next to each other. I find that quite humorous, though it's an important part of their characters as each other's foils.

Though some similarities really have no affect on the story, they're still similarities nonetheless. In chapter 9, when it began to snow, Mr. Avery and Miss Maudie both had a part in that chapter. I believe that they're both living by themselves, having no one else at their house. No wife, no husband, children, nothing. I'm led to believe in such a thing because we don't see them in the story if they had any. Also, they're both old, kind of too old to have a child.

Differences:
As I've said before, I always thought of Mr. Avery and Miss Maudie as polar opposites, alter-egos, foils, whatever you would like to call them. It's also pretty obvious why. I picture Mr. Avery as this old person who lives across the street while Miss Maudie as this nice neighbor who lets you come over and have a cup of coffee and let's you hang out a lot. That's one of my  differences, just because it's only how I picture them. But there are some real differences, a lot actually.

Mr. Avery is this conspiracy theorist that kind of hates the children, targeting them with his... "conspiracies". Example, "See what you've done?" he said. "Hasn't snowed in Maycomb since Appomattox. It's bad children like you makes the seasons change." While Mr. Avery is the one making the conspiracies, Miss Maudie is one that is being targeted with those conspiracies.

  1. You do a fantastic job discussing how they are foils of each other! You did not mention Scout at all though. What is their impact on her?
