Mushoku Tensei - 2/16/15

Prompt: What do you like about what you are reading?

Mushoku Tensei is an amazing book. It's a Light Novel that was created in Japan but I was able to read it since I read the english translated version. Also, the english translated version gives us images at the beginning of the story so we can picture what the characters look like. I’m very thankful, author-sempai.

Synopsis:
The story follows a jobless 34 year-old reincarnated in another body and a new world filled with swords and magic. In the time when he was a jobless 34 year-old, we didn’t hear his name, though when he was reincarnated, he received the name, Rudeus Greyrat, from his mother, Zenith Greyrat and father, Paul Greyrat. The story progresses in the phases of his new life. Infancy period, Juvenile period, Youth period, and his Young Man period. Though the story is still in progress with the new coming volumes, it’s just that as of right now, the story is in Rudeus’ Young Man period.

The Events:
During his Infancy (3 to 5 years old), Rudeus Greyrat had a great talent in magic. He was able to use advanced-ranked spells at the age of 3 when the average magician would reach that point at the age of 20. His parents first found out that he had talent in magic when he accidentally read an incantation of an advanced magic spell out loud and burned a hole in the roof. At that event, I absolutely loved the parent’s reaction.

“Darling, get a tutor!! We'll definitely find a good magic teacher in Roa!!”
And then, when they find someone with talent, the one thing all parents would do would be to get the best education for him.
In my previous life, my parents praised my younger brother's talent, and let him learn all kinds of things.
And so, Zenith suggested to hire a magician to be the home tutor.
But Paul objected to this idea.
“Wait, didn't we decide that if he's a boy, we'll make him a swordsman instead?”
If it's a guy, he'll take up a sword. If it's a girl, she'll learn magic.
It seemed that was decided before I was born.
“But he can activate intermediate spells at this age!! If he starts training now, he will become an amazing magician!!”
“But a promise is a promise, right!?”
“What promise!? Don't you always break your promises!?”
“My matters have nothing to do with this now, right!?”

I found this absolutely hilarious. Not only did they not care about the car-shaped-sized-hole in the wall, the parent’s had a lover’s quarrel in the middle of it. That reaction was so realistic, I would have never came up with that.

The Story:

Mushoku Tensei’s story is something that is unique and simple, that’s what makes it so great. Rudi’s (Rudeus) main goal in his story is to live his new life fulfillingly. This sets up the plot in a way to allow a lot of smaller events which all file into his main goal. This causes many different types of influence to Rudi, so as the story progresses, as new events come and passby, it all develops who Rudi is. This causes the story to join hands together with character development, it causes all the events to become relatable to each other. It causes all the events to matter. It makes every little detail so important. I was jaw-dropped, amazed when I noticed details from a hundred chapters ago come up later in the story. The story is flawless.

The Characters:
Every single character in this book grow and develop all throughout the series. Take the main character, Rudi, as an example. At the start of the story, when he was a 34 year-old infant, he saw the world in front of him as a game. He treats his parents as NPC characters and not his real parents. Although he says that he loves his parents, he doesn’t treat them as real parent’s. But as time goes on, he matures and starts seeing the world in front of him as his real life. In the beginning, Rudi was just a child who had the information of an adult. But as the story goes on, he becomes an adult who uses his knowledge to make the people around him happy.
This also applies to the side characters but in much less detail. The reader would get to know the character and would know the experiences that the character has gone through to understand it’s current attitude. But there are some parts in the story where I don’t understand how the character’s personality has changed so drastically. Take the character Roxxy as an example. At the beginning of the story, when Rudi was still and infant, she was his magic tutor. When they meet again, Rudi saved her life. At that moment, Roxxy creates feelings for him, now do you understand my confusion? She had no feelings for Rudi whatsoever, but after a long period of time, she falls in love with him after one event.

Conclusion:
Mushoku Tensei is such an addictive book that it has forced me to read 134 chapters (Assuming that each chapter is at least 5 pages, 670 pages.) in less than an entire week. I have spent so much time reading this book because it’s so good. I found nothing bad about this book and it has exceeded my expectations in many different categories. I believe that it’s a book that one must read sometime in their life.
